Who Is Doug McMillon?

Doug McMillon is the president and CEO of Walmart Inc., the world’s largest retailer by revenue. He was born Carl Douglas McMillon on October 17, 1966, and began working at Walmart in 1984 as a teenage warehouse associate, picking orders and unloading trailers.

After earning an MBA, he returned to Walmart’s headquarters and worked as a buyer and merchandiser before moving into senior leadership. He served as CEO of Sam’s Club from 2005 to 2009 and led Walmart International from 2009 to 2013, overseeing significant global growth before becoming Walmart’s CEO in 2014.

CEO Tenure and Upcoming Retirement

As CEO since 2014, McMillon has transformed Walmart into a people-led, tech-powered omnichannel retailer. He championed digital investments, supply chain upgrades, and e-commerce expansion, helping Walmart grow revenue and market value while facing intense competition from Amazon, Costco, and others.

In November 2025, Walmart announced that McMillon will retire as CEO on February 1, 2026, after more than a decade in the role. He will be succeeded by John Furner, currently head of Walmart U.S., marking a major leadership transition for the retail giant.
