Who is Bobby Shuttleworth?
Bobby Shuttleworth is an American former professional soccer goalkeeper and collegiate coach who has been named the new head coach of the Texas A&M women’s soccer program. After a 14-year playing career in Major League Soccer, he transitioned into coaching and quickly rose through the ranks in the college game.
Born in 1987, Shuttleworth played in MLS for clubs including the New England Revolution, Minnesota United, Chicago Fire and Atlanta United, making over 230 combined regular season and playoff appearances and ranking among the league’s most experienced goalkeepers.[1][2][4] His professional background has become a key selling point in recruiting and player development at the collegiate level.
Florida State success and coaching profile
Before taking over at Texas A&M, Shuttleworth spent four seasons on the Florida State women’s soccer staff, where he helped the Seminoles compile one of the best records in the nation.[1][2][3] Working under head coach Brian Pensky, he contributed to multiple ACC regular-season and tournament titles and deep NCAA Tournament runs, including a national championship in 2023.
Florida State’s 2023 campaign, with Shuttleworth on staff, produced a 22-0-1 record and a dominant NCAA Tournament run in which the team outscored opponents 21-1 en route to the national title.[2] The staff was honored as the 2023 National Coaching Staff of the Year, highlighting Shuttleworth’s role in building a disciplined, defensively sound, and attack-minded side that set a modern standard in women’s college soccer.[1][2]
What his hire means for Texas A&M
Shuttleworth’s appointment at Texas A&M comes at a pivotal time for the Aggies, who recently finished with a 5-7-5 overall record and 2-6-2 mark in SEC play, placing 13th in the conference and missing the NCAA Tournament for the third time in five years.[1] He follows legendary coach G Guerrieri, who retired after building the program from scratch and guiding it to hundreds of wins, numerous conference titles, and nearly three decades of NCAA Tournament appearances.[1]
By hiring Shuttleworth, Texas A&M is betting on a coach with elite-level experience and a proven record of success at a national powerhouse. His defensive expertise, goalkeeper development skills, and familiarity with championship standards are expected to reshape the Aggies’ style and competitiveness. Over the coming seasons, his impact will likely be judged by improved SEC results, a return to consistent NCAA Tournament berths, and the emergence of players capable of thriving in professional and international environments.
